What Is Pixiu — The Mythical Wealth Beast

Pixiu is one of the Nine Children of the Dragon King in Chinese mythology. It has the head of a winged lion, the body of a bear, and — this is the part that made it famous — an anus that seals shut. Whatever wealth it swallows stays inside. It does not leak. That single anatomical detail is the entire reason it became the wealth god of Feng Shui.

In classical texts, Pixiu served the Heavenly Court as a guardian of treasure. The Jade Emperor reportedly punished it for an offence by sealing its other end — turning it from a guardian into a vault. Since then, merchants, gamblers, and officials have carried it to draw in money and refuse to let it leave.

On a metaphysical level, Pixiu is a collector, not a creator. It does not manufacture money — it gathers what is already circulating. That distinction matters. If you are earning nothing, Pixiu has nothing to gather. If you are earning steadily but losing it as fast as it arrives — through bad investments, leaky contracts, over-spending, or a partner who drains you — that is precisely the pattern Pixiu is built to interrupt.

This is why Pixiu is rarely recommended alone. It works best as one node in a larger Feng Shui setup: your chart's Day Master direction, the wealth corner (Fu Wei) of your home, and the element your BaZi is actually short of. Treated as decoration, it looks the part. Treated as a system, it does what the folklore promises.

Who Should Wear Pixiu (Read Your BaZi First)

Pixiu is almost always described as universal: anyone can wear it, everyone benefits. That is marketing copy, not Feng Shui. The real rule depends on your BaZi birth chart — specifically your Day Master, the strength of your Wealth star, and the element you are short of. Who benefits most

• Charts with weak Wealth stars. If your Day Pillar does not contain a strong Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai 偏財) or Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai 正財) stem, money slips through your hands. Pixiu's collector nature compensates for this gap.
• Day Masters that are strong but lack output channels. Jia Wood, Geng Metal, and Bing Fire charts often have plenty of drive but few conduits. Pixiu acts as the conduit.
• Charts short on Earth or Metal. Pixiu itself sits in the Earth–Metal axis (more on this below). If your chart is missing these, the symbolism is doubled by the elemental remedy.

Who should be cautious

• Weak Day Masters already drowning in Earth. If your chart is dominated by Earth (Tuo 戊, Ji 己) and your Day Master is, say, Yin Wood or Ding Fire, adding more Earth via a heavy jade Pixiu can bury the Day Master further. Our Earth element page covers this dynamic in detail.
• Charts already heavy in Metal. Same logic in reverse. An over-loaded Metal chart with a silver or gold Pixiu on top can tip into the "Seven Killings" pattern (Qi Sha 七殺) where Metal cuts the Day Master. See the Metal element guide for the balancing rules.
• People in a year of loss or mourning. Tradition says Pixiu is a yang collector — it gathers, including grief. Some practitioners pause wearing it in a heavy year.

The cleanest test is to calculate your elemental balance first. If the result shows Wealth stars present but unrooted, or an element short by two or more points, Pixiu has work to do. If the chart is already saturated with Earth and Metal, save your money.

Left Wrist or Right Wrist — Which Is Correct

The wrist rule is the most contested topic in Pixiu folklore. The classical Chinese body-attribution system reads:

Head direction matters too. Pixiu is carved facing one direction. When worn, its head should point outward along the arm, toward the fingers, so wealth is "swept into" the body. Pointing it back toward the elbow is the most common beginner mistake — that orientation has it pushing wealth away from you.

Which Metal to Choose — Gold, Jade, Obsidian, Silver

The material of the Pixiu is not aesthetic. It determines which element the charm carries into your chart. Match the material to what your BaZi needs.

Quick decision rule: if you have not yet mapped your chart, gold is the safest default because Metal generates Water (which feeds most Day Masters) and Earth stabilizes Metal. If your chart shows heavy Fire and weak Water, switch to black obsidian instead.

Where to Place Pixiu at Home or on Your Desk

Pixiu does not need to be worn. Many practitioners keep a statue at home or on the office desk. Placement matters.

• Head outward. The same rule as the wrist: Pixiu's head faces away from the owner, toward the door or the wealth corner. Never toward a wall with no exit.
• Height matters. Place a home Pixiu on a high shelf — never on the floor. Floor placement is associated with the toilet or storage area, and the energy sinks rather than gathers.
• Avoid the bedroom. Pixiu is yang. It is restless and collecting. Bedrooms need stillness. Keep bedroom Feng Shui objects at low elemental intensity.
• Never two Pixiu statues facing each other. Two collectors in the same room fight for the same wealth. Either keep one, or pair male + female with the male pointing out and the female pointing in.
• Clean weekly. Pixiu absorbs what is in its space. A weekly dry cloth (no water on the head) is the minimum. Some practitioners also re-charge it briefly in morning sunlight.

The single most useful rule is: match the placement direction to the BaZi-friendly sector of your home, not the convention. If your chart is weak in Water, a Pixiu in the North sector (Water's home direction) compounds both remedies. If it is weak in Metal, the West and Northwest sectors amplify the same.

Pairing Pixiu With the Wealth Corner (Fu Wei)

The Wealth Corner — Xuan Wu or Fu Wei 伏位 — is the diagonal of your front door. Stand inside your home facing outward through the main entrance. The far-left corner is your wealth corner.

A Pixiu placed in this corner acts as a stationary collector, gathering the wealth chi as it circulates around the room. The combination works like this:
