Home Office Feng Shui for July: What the Desk Reads After the Li Qiu Handoff

The June 15 article on this thread was about focus slipping in summer, which is the Fire Month read at the desk. The Earth Month read is the opposite problem, and it is harder to name. The Fire Month homeowner could not hold a thought. The Earth Month homeowner can hold a thought. The Earth Month homeowner has five thoughts and cannot choose between them. The Li Qiu handoff rewrote the cycles, and the desk is now reading stability rather than motion. That sounds like a gift. It usually arrives as paralysis.

Why the home office gets the July 9 article

The July 7 hallway article named today as the home office day in the indoor thread. Two days have passed since Li Qiu, which is enough time for the seasonal polarity shift to settle from a moment into a state. The hallway read is the channel. The home office read is the anchor. The hallway lets the seasonal qi move. The home office lets the homeowner pin something down on the page or in the spreadsheet. Earth Month is the season the cycles read through anchors, and the home office is the indoor anchor where the season's stability problem shows up most directly.

The reason this article exists separately from the June 15 Fire Month home office piece: the Fire Month home office was about the desk as a Fire-tolerating surface. The Earth Month home office is about the desk as an Earth-tolerating surface, and the two surfaces read very differently. The Fire Month desk wanted motion, and the homeowner who kept the desk moving through June (rearranging the surface every few days, swapping the lamp, rotating the chair) was reading the season correctly. The Earth Month desk wants stillness, and the homeowner who keeps moving the desk in July is reading the season as if it were still June. The cost of getting the season wrong at the desk is not lost focus. The cost is misplaced focus, which is harder to see and harder to undo.

Thread-continuity: the indoor thread of Earth Month opened with the hallway on July 7, walked the dining room on July 8, and walks the home office today. The article after this one (July 10) walks the bedroom in Earth Month. The home office earns the second slot because the home office is the anchor that the hallway's channel qi feeds, and the homeowner who walks the corridor in the morning and sits at the desk by 9am is asking the seasonal qi to make a direct transition from channel to anchor. The transition is the part that goes wrong, and this article is the read of how to make it work.

The Fire Month homeowner could not hold a thought. The Earth Month homeowner has five thoughts and cannot choose between them. Same desk, same chair, same lamp. Different season. Different problem. The Li Qiu handoff did not take away the focus. It gave the homeowner too many places to put it.

What changed at the desk between June and July

Three things at the desk that were correct in June are wrong in July, and the homeowner who did the Fire Month article and is now doing the Earth Month article will be tempted to undo the June work. The recommendation is to leave the June work in place for the first week of July and add to it, not replace it. The June work was the right work for June. The July work layers on top of it. The Fire Month desk wanted motion, and the motion is still useful as the entry ritual for the Earth Month. The Earth Month desk adds the stillness underneath. Motion on entry, stillness once seated. That sequence is the July anchor.

The first thing that changed is the lamp. The Fire Month desk wanted a cool-white or daylight-tone bulb that pushed contrast and pulled the eye to the monitor. The Earth Month desk wants a warm-white bulb at moderate brightness that lets the eye release from the monitor and rest on the desk surface. The Fire Month lamp was set at full or near-full brightness. The Earth Month lamp is set at 60% to 70% on a dimmer, or replaced with a lower-wattage equivalent. The bulb swap is the cheapest move on the desk, and it is the move most homeowners skip because they do not think of it as a seasonal change. The cycles read it as the seasonal change.

The second thing that changed is the chair. The Fire Month chair wanted a firm seat with a slight lean forward, the kind of posture that kept the spine vertical and the eye forward. The Earth Month chair wants a softer seat with a slight lean back, the kind of posture that lets the spine settle into the backrest and the eye drift across the desk rather than fix on the monitor. The chair change is the most counterintuitive of the three, because a more relaxed posture sounds like a productivity loss. The cycles read it as the inverse: the homeowner whose posture is forcing focus in Earth Month is the homeowner who will be exhausted by 3pm. The posture that lets the body settle lets the mind settle, and a settled mind is the mind that can choose between five competing thoughts.

The third thing that changed is the monitor position. The Fire Month monitor wanted to be slightly above eye level, so the eye was tilted up and the page felt commanding. The Earth Month monitor wants to be at or slightly below eye level, so the eye is level or tilted down and the page felt receiving. The monitor lower by an inch (or a small stand removed from underneath) is the change. A monitor at Fire Month height in July is a monitor the cycles read as aggressive. The same monitor at Earth Month height is a monitor the cycles read as accepting. The height change is small, the read is large.

The desk surface, Earth Month edition

The Fire Month desk surface wanted to be clean, open, and lightly used. The Earth Month desk surface wants to be settled, anchored, and a little more lived-in. A desk surface with one or two personal objects on it (a small plant, a ceramic dish, a wooden pen holder, a small framed photo) is a desk the cycles read as inhabited. A desk surface that is bare except for the monitor and the keyboard is a desk the cycles read as institutional. The Fire Month article recommended keeping the desk surface mostly clear. The Earth Month article recommends keeping two or three objects on the desk, no more, chosen for their material rather than their meaning. Wood objects are the Sheng source (Wood feeds Earth). Ceramic objects are the season's own element (Earth). Metal objects are the Sheng output (Earth produces Metal). All three work in Earth Month. Plastic objects do not work in any month, and the homeowner with plastic desk objects should swap them as soon as convenient.

The desk surface also wants one warmer material in the visible field of view. A wooden desk pad, a leather blotter, a woven bamboo mat, or a felt desk pad in a warm tone (terracotta, ochre, deep red) is the material addition that does most of the Earth Month work. The Fire Month desk pad was the cool mesh or the metal pad. The Earth Month desk pad is the warm felt or the wood. A desk surface that was correct for June will usually need only the pad swap to read as correct for July, because the pad is the largest continuous surface on the desk and the cycles read surfaces more readily than objects.

What to leave alone in the home office in July

The home office has three features that the Fire Month article recommended and that the Earth Month article explicitly does not undo. The first is the chair rotation toward the door. The chair should still face or partially face the door of the home office, with the back not fully exposed to the entry. This is the year-round recommendation and does not change with the season. The homeowner who rearranged the chair to face the wall during the Fire Month distraction should put it back facing the door before the Earth Month work begins.

The second is the wall behind the seated position. The wall behind the seated position is the mountain of the home office in both seasons, and the cycles read it the same way in June and July. A wall that is solid, unornamented, and either painted in a warm color or hung with one landscape or mountain image is the year-round read. A wall with a window directly behind the seated position is the wrong read in any month, and the homeowner with a window behind the chair should address it before the Earth Month work begins. The window-behind-the-chair correction is a curtain. A warm-toned curtain, drawn during working hours, does the same work as a solid wall for the cycles.

The third is the floor under the desk. The floor under the desk wants to be a stable, settled surface in both seasons. A hard floor is fine (the cycles read it as solid). A rug under the desk is better (the cycles read it as grounded). A carpet that has been rolled up or moved aside is the wrong read in any month. The Fire Month article did not address the floor under the desk. The Earth Month article addresses it because the Earth Month is the season the cycles read the floor most heavily, and a floor that has been ignored for years becomes the floor that the seasonal handoff exposes.

The home-office-by-direction reading A home office that faces north is a Water-facing office and reads as cool. In Earth Month, the Water-facing office reads as a Ke target (Earth dams Water), and the recommendation is to add warmth at the front of the desk (a small lamp, a warm-toned object on the front edge). A home office that faces south is a Fire-facing office and reads as bright. In Earth Month, the Fire-facing office reads as the Sheng source (Fire creates Earth), and the recommendation is to leave it alone. An east-facing or west-facing office is a Wood-facing or Metal-facing office, and the Earth Month reads both as channel, not anchor. The recommendation for east or west is the standard Earth Month setup with no directional adjustment.

The day-master-by-element home office reading

The home office reads slightly differently for each of the five Day Masters, in the same way every article in the July thread reads slightly differently for each chart. The default home office setup above is the Earth-leaning standard, but a chart whose Day Master is sitting on a different element will read the desk through that element first. The breakdowns below are the per-chart adjustments for the second week of Earth Month, July 9 to July 16.

A Wood-heavy chart — Jia or Yi Day Master — reads the home office as a Sheng source. Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, so a Wood-heavy chart whose home office is settled and well-lit is a chart whose Sheng chain is working. The recommendation is the standard Earth Month home office setup with one addition: a small plant on the desk or on the windowsill. Wood is already the chart's element, and the plant confirms the channel without the homeowner needing to do anything else. A Wood-heavy chart whose home office has a plant by July 16 is a chart whose anchor will hold for the rest of July.

A Fire-heavy chart — Bing or Ding Day Master — reads the home office as a Ke target. Fire melts Metal, and the Fire-heavy chart whose home office is Metal-toned (cool-white lamps, steel desk frames, sharp minimal art) is a chart whose home office is asking for softening. The recommendation is to swap the cool-white bulb for warm-white, replace metal desk accessories with wood or ceramic, and add one warm-toned object (a clay cup, a wooden pen holder, a small terracotta figure). The Fire-heavy chart's Earth Month is read through the Ke direction, and the home office is the room where Ke correction is most actionable.

An Earth-heavy chart — Wu or Ji Day Master — reads the home office as home. The Earth-heavy chart's Day Master is the seasonal element, which means the Earth Month is the chart's month. The recommendation is to leave the home office alone and instead focus on the rooms the home office door opens onto. The Earth-heavy chart's home office is already reading correctly for the season, and the homeowner's attention is better spent on the hallway, the dining room, and the bedroom than on the desk itself. This is the one chart where the Earth Month home office article is mostly a confirmation read rather than an action list.

A Metal-heavy chart — Geng or Xin Day Master — reads the home office as a Sheng output. Earth produces Metal, so a Metal-heavy chart whose home office is Earth-toned is a chart whose Sheng chain is feeding. The recommendation is the standard Earth Month home office setup with the lamp set slightly higher than 60% (try 70%) and the desk pad extended to cover the working area fully rather than just the mouse area. The Metal-heavy chart's Earth Month is read through the Sheng direction, and the home office is the anchor where the Sheng work happens.

A Water-heavy chart — Ren or Gui Day Master — reads the home office as a Ke source. Earth damming Water is the Ke direction, and a Water-heavy chart whose home office is well-lit and well-aired is a chart whose Ke cycle is being asked to do too much work. The recommendation is to lower the lamp brightness to 50% (the lowest the bulb will go without being off entirely), close the home office door during deep-work hours rather than leaving it cracked, and skip the warm-toned desk pad in favor of the bare desk surface if it is already wood. The Water-heavy chart's Earth Month is read through the Ke direction, and the home office is the anchor where Ke over-correction shows up first.

The seven-day home office pass: what to do this week

The home office is the indoor anchor that responds most slowly to seasonal change, which is why the indoor thread of Earth Month reaches it second, not first. By the time the homeowner gets to the home office pass, the hallway has already been walked for two days and the seasonal qi has had time to settle into the anchor rooms. The seven-day pass below is the working read for the second week of Earth Month, July 9 to July 16. By July 16, the home office will have settled into its Earth Month baseline, and the homeowner who walked the desk through the second week will be reading the rest of the indoor rooms from a settled desk.

July 9 (Thu)
The lamp swap. Cool-white to warm-white if not already done from the hallway pass. Dimmer set to 65%. Warm desk pad if the desk surface is currently cool. The entry ritual: motion on entry, stillness once seated.
July 10 (Fri)
The chair adjustment. Soften the seat if the chair has a firmness dial. Lean back to a 100-degree posture rather than the 90-degree working posture. The eye should drift across the desk, not fix on the monitor.
July 11 (Sat)
The monitor height. Lower the monitor by an inch (remove a stand if needed). The eye should be level with the top of the screen, not tilted up. This is the most counterintuitive move of the week.
July 12 (Sun)
The desk surface. Add two or three personal objects to the desk surface if it is currently bare. Wood, ceramic, or warm-toned metal. Remove any plastic objects. Keep the plant off the desk if the chart is not Wood-heavy.
July 13 (Mon)
The direction adjustment. North-facing office: add a warm-toned object at the front edge of the desk. South-facing: leave alone. East or west-facing: standard setup only.
July 14 (Tue)
The day-master adjustment. Wood-heavy: confirm the plant. Fire-heavy: swap metal desk accessories for wood. Earth-heavy: leave alone. Metal-heavy: brighten the lamp to 70%, extend the desk pad. Water-heavy: dim the lamp to 50%, remove the pad.
July 15 (Wed)
The settled read. Sit at the desk at the same time of day as the first sit on July 9. Note the differences. The desk should feel less aggressive, less demanding, more accepting. The posture should feel like a place to land rather than a place to push from.

The seven-day pass assumes the homeowner has a home office that is a separate room. A home office that is a corner of a living room or a shared bedroom is a home office the cycles read as conditional, and the recommendation is to mark the boundary with a small rug under the desk and a separate lamp on the desk, even if the rest of the room is shared. The boundary marks the anchor. Without a boundary, the cycles read the desk as a surface, not a room, and the seasonal anchor read does not apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have two monitors. Does the second monitor change the home office read?
Two monitors are the Fire Month read. The Fire Month desk wanted competing points of focus, and a dual-monitor setup was the way the homeowner kept the visual field active. The Earth Month home office wants a single point of focus, and a second monitor is a competing point. The recommendation is to turn the second monitor off during the working day through July, and to physically rotate it away from the seated position if the second monitor is on a swing arm. A second monitor that is off is a monitor the cycles read as dim. A second monitor that is on at low brightness is a monitor the cycles read as a Ke target. A second monitor at full brightness is the Fire Month read, and the homeowner who keeps both monitors at full brightness in July is reading the season as June.
What about the home office when I am not working? Evenings, weekends.
The Earth Month home office reads as an anchor even when the homeowner is not working. The recommendation is to leave the desk lamp at the same warm-white setting during non-working hours (the cost is a few cents of electricity and the benefit is a settled anchor room for the rest of the house). The desk surface should not be cleared during non-working hours either. The Earth Month desk wants the two or three personal objects on it through the evening, because the cycles read the empty surface as institutional. A weekend away from the home office is fine. A weekend of clearing the desk surface every Saturday is the Fire Month read, and the cycles read the cleared surface as the seasonal polarity just shifted back to May.
My home office is in the basement. Does Earth Month read differently below grade?
A basement home office is a home office the cycles read as always-Earth, which is both a help and a hindrance in Earth Month. The help: the Earth-heavy read of a basement is already aligned with the seasonal Earth. The hindrance: the cycles do not need additional Earth correction in a basement, and adding more (more warm-toned objects, heavier lamps, denser rugs) over-corrects. The recommendation for a basement home office is the standard Earth Month setup but lighter on additions. One warm-toned object rather than three. One rug rather than layered rugs. One warm bulb rather than two. A basement office that has been over-Earth-corrected in July is a basement office the cycles read as compressed, which is the opposite of the settling read.
What about the books on the home office shelf? Does the cycle rule apply?
The books on the home office shelf read differently from the books on other shelves, because the cycles read the working shelf as anchor and the decorative shelf as background. The recommendation is to leave the books as they are during Earth Month. A bookshelf that is constantly rearranged is a bookshelf the cycles read as unsettled, which is the Fire Month read. The homeowner who tidies the bookshelf every weekend is reading the season as June. The Earth Month wants the bookshelf to stay where it is through the month, with the homeowner adding books when new ones arrive and removing books when they are finished, but no general rearrangement. A bookshelf that has not been touched in a year is not the same as a bookshelf that has been deliberately left alone. The deliberate non-action is the Earth Month read.
I use a standing desk. Does the posture adjustment change?
A standing desk is a Fire Month desk by structure, because the standing posture is the posture that forces focus and pushes motion. The Earth Month read for a standing desk is to lower it for the seated work and use the standing position only for the entry ritual (the first five minutes of the working day) and the closing ritual (the last five minutes). A homeowner who stands all day in July is reading the season as June. A homeowner who lowers the desk to seated height for the bulk of the working day is reading the season correctly. The chair recommendation in this article applies when the desk is lowered. A standing desk that has been lowered for July is a desk the cycles read as settled.
How does this connect to the June home office article?
The June 15 article was the Fire Month home office read. The June article addressed the problem of focus slipping — the homeowner who could not hold a thought at the desk. The July article addresses the problem of focus refusing to land — the homeowner who has five thoughts and cannot choose between them. The June article recommended motion, cool contrast, and forward-leaning posture. The July article recommends stillness, warm surfaces, and slight back-leaning posture. The two articles together are the seasonal read of the home office across the full Fire-to-Earth handoff. The homeowner who reads both and applies the layered recommendations has an office that reads correctly from May through August.
What if my home office is also the guest room?
A home office that doubles as a guest room is a dual-purpose room, and the cycles read it as anchor when the desk is in use and as channel when the bed is in use. The Earth Month recommendation is to keep the desk visible from the bed and the bed visible from the desk, so the cycles never read the room as one-purpose. A folding Murphy bed is fine if it stays visible at the foot during the day and folds away cleanly when guests arrive. The room that switches between purposes mid-week is a room the cycles read as expected to switch, and the recommendation is to switch deliberately, not automatically. A homeowner who switches the room by rolling the bed away every morning is the Fire Month read.
