A BaZi chart (八字, Bā Zì — "Eight Characters") is a map of the cosmic energy at your exact moment of birth. It captures the interplay between the year, month, day, and hour — each pillar carrying a Heavenly Stem (天干, Tiān Gān) and an Earthly Branch (地支, Dì Zhī). Learning to read this chart is the foundation of all BaZi destiny analysis.

This guide walks you through how to arrange and interpret your own Four Pillars (四柱, Sì Zhù), step by step. No prior knowledge required.

What You Need Before You Begin

To construct your BaZi chart, you need three pieces of information:

  • Exact birth date — day, month, and year in the Gregorian calendar
  • Exact birth time — hour and minute, in the local time of the birth location
  • Time zone offset — the standard offset from UTC for the birth location at the time of birth (not daylight saving time)

With these three inputs, a BaZi calculator can generate your full chart. The process below shows you how to read what comes out.

Step 1 — Gather Your Birth Data

If you do not already have your exact birth details, ask a parent or check a birth certificate. BaZi is highly sensitive to the two-hour window of your birth — an approximate time will produce inaccurate results, particularly for the Hour Pillar (时柱, Shí Zhù). Our free BaZi calculator handles time zone conversion automatically.

The Structure of a BaZi Chart

Every BaZi chart contains four pillars. Each pillar has a stem and a branch, and the Day Pillar contains one additional element: the Day Master, which is the central axis of the entire chart.

YEAR PILLAR (年柱) Jiǎ (甲) Yín (寅) MONTH PILLAR (月柱) Yǐ (乙) Mǎo (卯) DAY PILLAR (日柱) Bǐng (丙) Wǔ (午) HOUR PILLAR (时柱) Wǔ (戊) Shēn (申)

The example above shows a chart where the Day Pillar stem is Bǐng (丙), making Fire the Day Master. This is the character at the center of the chart — the "you" against which all other energies are measured.

Step 2 — Find Your Day Master

The Day Master (日主, Rì Zhǔ) is the single most important element in your chart. It represents your core self — your personality, motivations, and the way you interact with the world. All other elements in your chart are interpreted relative to the Day Master.

To find your Day Master, look at the stem of your Day Pillar — the first character in the third row of your chart. That stem is your Day Master.

The Ten Heavenly Stems and the Day Master

The ten Heavenly Stems cycle through in a fixed order. The stem at your Day Pillar determines your Day Master, and your Day Master determines which of the Five Elements you are most closely associated with:

StemElementYin/YangNature
Jiǎ (甲)WoodYangTall tree — upright, noble, direct
Yǐ (乙)WoodYinFlower — flexible, artistic, adaptable
Bǐng (丙)FireYangBright lamp — expressive, enthusiastic, outward
Dīng (丁)FireYinCandle flame — warm, focused, intense interior
Wǔ (戊)EarthYangMountain — stable, patient, enduring
Jǐ (己)EarthYinGarden soil — nurturing, practical, receptive
Gēng (庚)MetalYangSword blade — sharp, decisive, competitive
Xīn (辛)MetalYinRefined jade — precise, elegant, refined
Rén (壬)WaterYangOcean — flowing, expansive, visionary
Guǐ (癸)WaterYinMorning dew — intuitive, introspective, subtle

Step 3 — Identify the Four Pillars

Once you have your Day Master, list out each of the four pillars in order: Year, Month, Day, Hour. For each pillar, note the stem and branch. Ask yourself: does each pillar support the Day Master, challenge it, or drain it? This is the basis of all BaZi interpretation.

The Role of Each Pillar

Each pillar governs a distinct phase and dimension of life:

Year Pillar (年柱, Nián Zhù)

The Year Pillar describes your early life — roughly ages 0 to 18. It represents your ancestors, family background, and the outer circumstances you were born into. It also shows how the world first perceived you and the environment that shaped your earliest development.

Month Pillar (月柱, Yuè Zhù)

The Month Pillar governs young adulthood — roughly ages 18 to 36. It describes your parents, your career foundation, and your relationship with the structures of society. In many BaZi systems, the Month Pillar also provides the seasonal context for your chart, since the month branch represents the solar term (节气) in which you were born.

Day Pillar (日柱, Rì Zhù)

The Day Pillar is the axis of the entire chart. The stem is your Day Master — your core identity. The branch is your "inner self" or spouse/partner pillar, showing your private character and your closest relationships.

Hour Pillar (时柱, Shí Zhù)

The Hour Pillar governs later life — roughly age 55 and beyond. It represents your children, legacy, and your inner psychological world. If the Hour Pillar is missing from your chart (a situation called 空亡, Kōng Wáng — "empty void"), the interpretation shifts: there may be less distinction between your public and private selves, or a weaker connection to legacy and posterity.

Step 4 — Read the Ten Gods

The Ten Gods (十神, Shí Shén) are not deities — they are labels for the relationship between each stem in your chart and your Day Master. They describe how the different energies in your chart behave toward you: do they support you, challenge you, or drain you?

The Ten Gods are derived from the five relationships between elements (generating and controlling), each with a Yin and Yang polarity, giving ten distinct relationship types:

GodChineseRelationship to Day MasterTheme
Direct Resource正印 (Zhèng Yìn)Same element, opposite polarityKnowledge, recognition, stability
Indirect Resource偏印 (Piān Yìn)Same element, same polarityUnconventional insight, self-reliance
Direct Officer正官 (Zhèng Guān)Controls Day Master element, opposite polarityAuthority, structure, reputation
Seven Killings七杀 (Qīshā)Controls Day Master element, same polarityPressure, crisis, transformation
Direct Wealth正财 (Zhèng Cái)Day Master controls this element, opposite polaritySteady income, material security
Indirect Wealth偏财 (Piān Cái)Day Master controls this element, same polaritySpeculative income, opportunities
Eating God食神 (Shí Shén)Day Master generates this elementExpression, creativity, outflow
Hurting Officer伤官 (Shāng Guān)Day Master generates, but it also controls Day MasterInnovation, disruption, challenge
Rob Wealth比肩 (Bǐshǒu)Same element as Day Master, same polaritySelf-reliance, independence
Friend Wealth劫财 (Jiécaí)Same element as Day Master, opposite polarityPartnership, competition, shared resources

Look at the stems in your Year, Month, and Hour Pillars. Each one maps to a Ten God based on its relationship to your Day Master. The dominant gods in your chart reveal your core tendencies: are you someone driven by recognition and structure (heavy Officer)? Or by creative expression (heavy Eating God)? Or by financial ambition (heavy Wealth)?

For a full breakdown of each god's personality meaning, see our Complete Guide to the Ten Gods in BaZi.

Step 5 — Check the Hidden Stems

Each Earthly Branch contains one or more hidden stems in addition to its main stem. These are called 藏干 (Cáng Gān) — hidden stems. They add nuance to each pillar. For example, the branch Yín (寅, Tiger) contains Jiǎ (甲, Yang Wood) as its main stem, but also Bǐng (丙, Yang Fire) and Wǔ (戊, Yang Earth) hidden within it. Reading the hidden stems gives you a fuller picture of each pillar's energy.

Step 6 — Assess the Five Elements Balance

A BaZi chart is not complete until you have checked the overall elemental balance. Count how many stems of each element appear in your chart (including hidden stems):

  • Wood — Jiǎ (甲), Yǐ (乙)
  • Fire — Bǐng (丙), Dīng (丁)
  • Earth — Wǔ (戊), Jǐ (己)
  • Metal — Gēng (庚), Xīn (辛)
  • Water — Rén (壬), Guǐ (癸)

Ask yourself: which elements are dominant? Which are absent or weak? A chart dominated by one element will produce a very different personality and life path than a chart with all five elements well represented. The goal in classical BaZi is not balance for its own sake — rather, the interpretation focuses on whether the Day Master has enough support (generating elements) and is not overwhelmed by its controlling elements.

Step 7 — Review Your Luck Cycles

Your birth chart is the landscape. Your Luck Cycles (大运, Da Yùn) are the weather — they determine which energies are active at different periods of your life. Luck Cycles are ten-year cycles that overlay your birth chart, each cycle bringing a different elemental energy to the foreground.

Understanding your Luck Cycles helps you answer the "when" questions that BaZi is known for: when is the right time to start a business? When should you expect career pressure? When is a relationship likely to develop? For a full guide, see our article on Luck Cycles in BaZi (Da Yùn).

A Complete Worked Example

Let us walk through a complete chart reading to tie everything together. Consider a person born on 14 May 1990 at 3:30 PM in Shanghai.

Constructing the Chart

The calculator generates the following Four Pillars:

YEAR PILLAR (年柱) Gēng (庚) Wǔ (午) MONTH PILLAR (月柱) Yǐ (乙) Sì (巳) DAY PILLAR (日柱) Rén (壬) Shēn (申) HOUR PILLAR (时柱) Bǐng (丙) Shēn (申)

Interpretation

The Day Master is Rén (壬) — Yang Water. The chart has strong Metal presence (two Shēn申 branches), which generates Water. The Month Stem Yǐ (乙) is Yin Wood, which is Rén's generating element. Overall, the Day Master is well-supported by generating elements — a relatively balanced chart for a Yang Water person.

The dominant Ten God in the Year Pillar is Direct Wealth (正财), because Gēng (庚, Yang Metal) is the element that Rén (壬, Yang Water) controls. The Month Stem Yǐ (乙, Yin Wood) is an Indirect Resource (偏印) for Rén. The Hour Stem Bǐng (丙, Yang Fire) is Seven Killings (七杀), meaning this chart has some built-in tension that must be managed.

The interpretation would focus on: the person's relationship with financial resources and material security (strong Direct Wealth), their need for unconventional insight and self-directed learning (Indirect Resource), and the ongoing challenge of managing pressure and crisis situations (Seven Killings) throughout their life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between BaZi and Western astrology?

Western astrology centers on the position of the Sun at your birth. BaZi uses your full birth date and time — year, month, day, and hour — to create a much more detailed energetic map. BaZi also uses a 10-year Luck Cycle system (Da Yùn) that Western astrology does not have, giving BaZi the ability to answer timing questions that Western astrology cannot address. See our full comparison: BaZi Reading vs Western Astrology.

How accurate is the Hour Pillar in BaZi?

The Hour Pillar is one of the most sensitive components of a BaZi chart because it requires an exact birth time. Even 30 minutes difference can shift the Hour stem. If you are unsure of your birth time, try running the chart with the nearest two possible hours and compare — a competent BaZi reader can often identify which chart "resonates" more strongly with the client's life experience.

Can two people have the same BaZi chart?

In theory, any two people born in the same year-month-day-hour at the same location would have identical BaZi charts. In practice, this is vanishingly rare. Even when charts are very similar, the Luck Cycles will diverge because the luck cycles are calculated from the exact year-month-day of birth, not just the stem-branch combinations. This is why BaZi readings always feel personally specific in a way that mass-market horoscopes do not.

What does it mean if an element is missing from my chart?

A missing element does not mean you lack that energy entirely — it means that element is less available to you as a life theme. A chart with no Fire, for example, may describe someone who is less naturally expressive or outgoing, or who encounters situations where enthusiasm and warmth are not easily accessed. This is not good or bad — it simply describes a tendency that the person may need to consciously develop.

How often do Luck Cycles change?

Luck Cycles (Da Yùn) change every 10 years. Each cycle brings a different elemental energy into focus, shifting your dominant life themes, motivations, and the types of opportunities or challenges you are most likely to encounter. Knowing your Luck Cycles allows you to time major decisions — career moves, relationships, financial ventures — for periods when the energy is favorable.

Do I need a BaZi master to read my chart, or can I learn to do it myself?

You can learn the fundamentals of BaZi reading yourself. Understanding your Day Master, reading your Ten Gods profile, and assessing your elemental balance are all accessible with study and practice. For deeper interpretation — especially reading hidden stems in context, understanding complex pillar interactions, and timing predictions — working with an experienced BaZi analyst adds significant value.
